Can vitamin D help prevent lung cancer for returning or spreading? Researchers think it might play a role, and now they've found the Achilles heel: An enzyme that interferes with the anti-cancer effects of vitamin D. A new study shows about a third of patients have high levels of this enzyme and these patients have worse survival. Researchers believe that targeting vitamin D treatments to patients with lower levels of the enzyme will be more effective. Further, they are working to find new drugs that can block this enzyme and restore vitamin D's anti-cancer power. Joining the show to discuss this study is Associate Professor, Hematology & Oncology for University of Michigan Medicine Oncology Cancer Center, Nithya Ramnath.
