Tongue Cancer Survivor
Award winning chef and author, Grant Achatz joins the show to discuss his personal journey in the fight against tongue cancer and how becoming your own health advocate is crucial when battling serious health issues.
Grant Achatz is the chef and co-owner of Alinea restaurant in Chicago, which in April 2010 was named the #1 Restaurant in North America and the #7 restaurant in the world by Restaurant magazine. Born in St. Clair, Michigan, in 1974, Achatz grew up working in his family's restaurant and after high school, attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, graduating in 1994. Two years after Alinea opened, Achatz was diagnosed with stage IVb cancer in his tongue and lymph nodes. He quickly entered a progressive treatment program at the University of Chicago Hospital. Throughout his treatments, Achatz remained a strong presence in the kitchen of Alinea, and in early 2008, he was given a clean bill of health. He remains cancer-free today. The father of two sons, Kaden and Keller, he lives near Alinea, in Chicago.
