Guest Info
Michael Jay Nusbaum, MD, FACS, FASMBS is the Chief of Bariatric Surgery at Morristown Memorial Hospital and President of the NJ Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He trained at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and was fortunate to have been trained by Dr. Lubomyr Kuzmak (the inventor of the adjustable gastric band) among other highly regarded surgeons. Dr. Nusbaum began his surgical career at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in early 1998. He started the Laparoscopic Bariatric Program at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in 2000 and was the first surgeon to successfully perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass there. He was also the first surgeon to perform a laparoscopic gastric banding at Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Since then, he has performed well over 2,000 laparoscopic gastric bypasses and over 1,500 laparoscopic gastric banding procedures (Lap Band and Realize Band). Nusbaum was the first surgeon to invent and report on the concept of "Intra-operative Upper GI Swallowing Studies to Rule out Leakage." This technique consists of placing a tube into the stomach while the patient is still asleep. Then contrast is injected into the stomach under intra-operative fluoroscopy (This is the same contrast typically used the next day). This way, if there is a leak, it can be detected and fixed prior to leaving the operating room. He is also, one of only a hand full of surgeons, who take the time to over sew the entire anastamosis (connection between the stomach and small intestine) with permanent silk sutures as an extra layer of protection.
