Globally, more than a billion adults and children are overweight or obese. The consequences of chronic diseases are no longer simply issues for Western countries; they are issues for the developing world, where more of the population will continue to adopt a Western diet and become more sedentary. At the same time, our population is aging. By 2020, more than 700 million people around the world will be over age 65.
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) strongly supports and is pleased to be part of the U.N. High-Level Meeting on NCDs and the U.N. acknowledgment that acting on NCDs is critical to the global development agenda. James R. Whitehead is executive vice president of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the world's largest organization dedicated to sports medicine and exercise science. ACSM represents more than 45,000 international, national and regional members and certified professionals. Jim has helped develop and guide many organizations, coalitions and initiatives, including the National Physical Activity Plan, the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity, the Inclusive Fitness Coalition, the Female Athlete Triad Coalition, the Joint Commission on Sports Medicine and Science, and the National Council on Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. He has served as a speaker, panelist or consultant for more than 125 organizations, including the U.S. Olympic Committee, the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association and the American Public Health Association.
Janet Walberg Rankin, Ph.D., FACSM, was recently elected to be the 56th President of the American College of Sports Medicine. She is currently serving as the President-Elect, and she will take over as President at the 2012 ACSM Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA. Dr. Rankin is a Professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise at Virginia Tech. Dr. Rankin's laboratory Our laboratory focuses on nutritional interventions in two populations: athletes and obese individuals.
