Dr. Howard Rankin
Mental Well-Being Creates Physical Health
Dr. Howard Rankin joins Danika to explain that we humans are hard-wired to respond physically to the things that affect us emotionally, and that what happens in the brain impacts the entire body. The brain influences your reactions and has a profound effect on energy, motivation and cognition.
Dr. Howard J. Rankin is the creator of www.scienceofyou.com and founder and president of the American Brain Association. He is a licensed clinical psychologist and author with a strong background in health, relationships, communication, neuropsychology, and mind-body medicine. He started his career at the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London where he pioneered temptation management and other techniques for the treatment of addictions. Dr. Rankin came to the United States in 1986 and is a nationally recognized expert, author, and educator who has been quoted in numerous periodicals and newspapers (for example, the Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times) and has appeared on many radio and TV shows, including The View, CNN, and ABC’s 20/20. Dr. Rankin has written five books on communication, wellness, and relationships and has coauthored two more. His Inspired to Lose reached #50 on the Amazon.com bestseller list (and #5 in its Mind, Body, Spirit titles) in November 2001. Finding Happiness, coauthored with Todd Patkin, is due out in 2011. As an academic, Dr. Rankin has written over fifty scientific papers, been an associate editor of the prestigious scientific journal Addictive Behaviors, and held appointments at the Universities of London, Oxford, and South Carolina. He has also been a consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Dr. Rankin has a private psychotherapy practice, the Rankin Center for Neuroscience and Integrative Health, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. There, he treats a variety of conditions, including eating disorders, addictions, anxiety, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress, and neurocognitive conditions. He works with children, adolescents, and adults in both an individual and family context. Dr. Rankin is a long-time proponent of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI)—also known as “mind-body medicine”—and he and his team of integrative health specialists are thrilled to have the ability to continue to develop innovative assessment, training, and therapeutic techniques by using cutting edge technology to synthesize psychological, cognitive, neurological, and behavioral data. The Center’s customized training and treatment programs include neuro-feedback, brain training, psychotherapy, cognitive therapy, and behavioral training. The combination of brain training with psychotherapeutic methods makes the Center a unique treatment and behavior change facility.
