Rare Disease: New Information in the Treatment of GISTShow: Health Beat of America
Michael Heinrich, M.D.
Rare diseases, such as rare forms of cancer, are classified as diseases that affect fewer than 200,000 people in the US. One example of these rare diseases is gastrointestinal stromal tumors, or GIST, a life-threatening cancer of the gastrointestinal tract. Fortunately, research is being conducted. In fact, new study results on the treatment of this disease were recently presented at the prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) that evaluated using an existing treatment in a different way to help keep patients cancer free longer. Dr. Michael Heinrich, Professor of Medicine, Oregon Health Sciences University joins the show to discuss this new information.
