Grant Achatz is the chef and co-owner of Alinea restaurant in Chicago, which in April 2010 was named the #1 Restaurant in North America and the #7 restaurant in the world by Restaurant magazine. Born in St. Clair, Michigan, in 1974, Achatz grew up working in his family's restaurant and after high school, attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, graduating in 1994. Two years after Alinea opened, Achatz was diagnosed with stage IVb cancer in his tongue and lymph nodes. He quickly entered a progressive treatment program at the University of Chicago Hospital.
