Palliative Care For Children
Brian S. Carter, MD, FAAP, Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology at Vanderbilt, comes on the show to discuss Pediatric Palliative Care (PPC). He will discuss balancing the potential values of hopefulness for survival with quality supportive care for the patient and family. He will answer such delicate questions as what is palliative care? Is it only for children who are near to death? and does talking about palliative care mean a family is "giving up"?
Brian is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology at Vanderbilt. He is a 1979 graduate of David Lipscomb College and a 1983 graduate of the University of Tennessee's College of Medicine. He received training in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine in Colorado (at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center and the University of Colorado), and has been trained in clinical ethics and palliative care. His work is based in academic neonatology, and includes attending and consulting in the fetal diagnosis clinics, the NICU, and the NICU Follow-Up Clinics at Vanderbilt, teaching, curriculum development, writing, and speaking. He has focused attention on advancing pediatric palliative care for the past 13 years. He lives in Nashville with his wife and is the proud father of four children.
