Preparticipation Physical Evaluation for Youth Sports
The overarching goal in performing a preparticipation physical evaluation (PPE) is to promote the health and safety of the athlete in training and competition. The PPE provides the medical background on which physical activity decisions will be made by the individual athlete's physician or the team physician and associated medical staff.

Dr. Roberts a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School and Program Director at Phalen Village Family Medicine Residency Clinic in St Paul, MN. His special medical interests are in sports medicine and he has a sub-specialty certificate in Sports Medicine, is a Fellow, Past President, and current Foundation President of the American College of Sports Medicine; a charter member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine; a founding member and past President of the American Road Race Medical Society; an Editorial Board Member of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, British Journal of Sports Medicine, and Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine; a Section Editor and In-coming Editor in Chief for Current Sports Medicine Reports; the Medical Director for the Twin Cities Marathon; the Chair of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for the Minnesota State High School League and a member of the USA Soccer Cup Tournament Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. His research is in ice hockey and marathon injury. He has authored many research and educational publications in sports medicine, and has presented nationally and internationally on sports medicine topics. Dr. David Bernhardt specializes in pediatric and adolescent primary care sports medicine. He is board certified in pediatrics and fellowship trained in sports medicine. He is a team physician for the University of Wisconsin Athletic Department. In this role, he provides medical coverage for Badger men's basketball, soccer, cross country and track, as well as women's volleyball, crew, cross country and track. His special interests include medical problems in athletes and musculoskeletal syndromes related to running.
