Drowning is a leading cause of injury-related death in children. In 2006, fatal drowning claimed the lives of approximately 1100 US children younger than 20 years. A number of strategies are available to prevent these tragedies. As educators and advocates, pediatricians can play an important role in the prevention of drowning. >br>
Dr.Garry Gardner, MD, FAAP, chair of the AAP Committee on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention, comes on the show to discuss the new reccommendations by the AAP and offer advice on keeping our children safe around water.

Dr.Gardner is currently the chair of the AAP Committee on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention. He is a primary care pediatrician in private practice in Darien, Illinois. He is a professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Northwestern University Medical School and teaches at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Gardner is Co-Chair of the Medical Advisory Board at Easter Seals DuPage in Villa Park. He is a founding board member and Past President of the Illinois Maternal and Child Health Coalition. Dr. Gardner is also Past President of the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and currently serves on the editorial board of Pediatric News. Dr. Gardner is the 2007 recipient of the Pathways Pioneer Award for her outstanding commitment to assuring the best for all babies’ physical development.
