Physical Activity for Cognitive Performance
Jennifer L. Etnier, Ph.D., FACSM, comes on the show to discuss what we know about the effects of regular physical activity for people with impaired cognitive performance.
Dr. Jennifer L. Etnier received her B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee in 1988, her M.A. from the University of North Carolina in 1990, and her Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 1995. She was an Assistant Professor at Wake Forest University and an Associate Professor at Arizona State University. Dr. Etnier is currently a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She conducts research in the field of sport and exercise psychology with a focus on physical activity and cognition across the lifespan. In particular, she is interested in understanding the specifics about the relationship between physical activity and cognitive performance. For example, she strives to conduct research to answer the following questions: For whom does physical activity have the greatest cognitive benefits? On which types of cognitive tasks does physical activity have its greatest effects? What are the mechanisms that explain why physical activity improves cognition? Are there ways of further improving cognitive benefits by combining physical activity with other interventions? Dr. Etnier has published numerous empirical articles and several scholarly book chapters and is also the author of Bring Your A Game, a book designed to make sport psychology techniques accessible to young athletes. She has served on the Editorial Board for "Mental Health and Physical Activity", as Section Editor for "Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport", and as Associate Editor for the "Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology". She currently serves as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity and as Communication Director for the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity. She is an elected Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
