Dr Holly J. Benjamin, MD, FAAP, FACSM, Chair for the Committee on Sports Medicine and Fitness for the ICAAP, comes on the show to discuss a new AAP clinical report on sports and energy drinks. She will also discuss the best hydration for kids playing sports or exercising, and what precautions should parents, coaches and children take when exercising in very hot weather?
Holly J. Benjamin, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery; Section of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Chicago. She attended Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in the combined BS/MD program and received her medical degree in 1994. She completed her residency training in Pediatrics at the University of Chicago and subsequently finished a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Lutheran General Hospital; Park Ridge, IL. She currently serves as Chair for the Committee on Sports Medicine and Fitness for the ICAAP and is a member of the executive committee for the national AAP Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness. Dr. Benjamin also serves on the Board of Directors for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). She is the second female pediatrician in the country ever to be elected a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). She serves as a team physician for a local high school and college and is a consultant to many gymnastic clubs, soccer, swim and baseball teams. Dr. Benjamin recently served as a volunteer team physician at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Dr. Benjamin has dedicated a significant amount of time to education and research. She has published many articles and has presented at the local, regional and national levels on a wide variety of sports medicine topics and serves as a reviewer for AMSSM, AAP and the AJSM. Dr. Benjamin’s research and clinical interests include pediatric sports safety, injury prevention and injury rehabilitation issues, the female athlete, head injury and return to play issues, growth plate injuries, Ca-MRSA, proprioceptive deficits in ankle sprains and the biomechanics of gait. She promotes the ongoing education of physicians and allied health professionals in the field of primary care sports medicine and is the founder and chair of Current Concepts in Primary Care Sports Medicine.
