June 21 is ASK Day, which stands for Asking Saves Kids. It's a campaign to encourage parents to ask their kids' friends parents if there are guns in the home before they visit (an awkward, but important conversation to have). Dr Beth Ebel, a member of the AAP Committee on Injury, Violence & Poison Prevention, comes on the show to discuss this important topic and advise parents on why it is important to ask this question before you allow your child to play at someone's house, and how you can broach this question without offending people. She will give some good examples of how to phrase the question, and how commonly children are injured by guns.

Beth Ebel is an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington and the director of the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center. Her research interests include injury prevention, community interventions and health behaviors with emphasis on high-risk populations. Ebel received a master's in science in development economics from Oxford University in 1989, her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and the MIT Health Sciences and Technology Program in 1996, and a master's in public health from the University of Washington in 2001.
