Dr. Michael Kaplan, founder and chief medical officer of The Center for Medical Weight Loss was a practicing internist in Long Island when he realized many of his patients were living with health problems caused or worsened by obesity. As he treated these patients, he recognized two things: obesity is a disease and food can be an addiction. Dr. Kaplan started practicing bariatric medicine a branch of medicine specializing in the treatment of obesity in November 2001. To help even more patients lose weight safely and effectively, he developed a weight-management program that would become the basis for The Center for Medical Weight Loss, which he launched in November 2006. Today the Center for Medical Weight Loss is the largest network of non-surgical medical weight loss providers in the U.S. with more than 420 offices in 46 U.S. states.
